It's not very often that you happen upon a FIRST YEAR Clinton (later purchased by Tecumseh in the 1960s or 1970s) outboard motor!!! In time HUGE numbers of these venerable Clinton 2 1/2 to 3 horsepower air cooled motors would be sold, BUT in 1955 they were JUST starting out. Check out how NICE the paint and original decals are on this motor. Yes, the gas cap is MISSING, but that should not be a hard problem to solve. There has previously been a welding repair to the tilt bracket of the motor- please see the photos. I believe that they used the same parts on similar models for many years after 1955. This motor features an unusual HIGH rising "BULLDOG" automatic recoil starter- Clinton did not stay with this design for long! The inside of the gas tank is clean and the motor is turning over with a good slug of compression- the recoil start appears to need the pawls cleaned and greased as the rope pulls out and retracts but does not "grab".
So here it is- from the VERY BEGINNING of Clinton, who would go on to change their design within a year or two and then stay with a design that was badged both Clinton and Chief from the mid-late 1950s for at LEAST another whole decade and then the powerhead stayed beyond that into the 1970s!! I have popped the flywheel on a slightly newer Clinton Chief before and it was the very same magneto used by Neptune Mighty Mites and a host of other engines- the coils almost never fail and they are easy to service. I'm not sure what else to say about this one, other than- when was the last time you saw another FIRST YEAR Clinton outboard? Missing fuel cap and all it almost couldn't have been as NICE as this one is!
