HTF 1929 Johnson Mod K-45 7.15 HP Outboard 1st Year Underwater Exhaust - $200 (Trigg County)

condition: good
make / manufacturer: Johnson
model name / number: K-45

This motor is as good an example of being a "first" while also being the "last" as there ever was with antique outboards. In 1929 most outboard motors had an exhaust can style above water exahust system. Johnson introduced optional underwater exhaust in 1929 for the K-45!! Unfortunately that would also be the last year of production for the opposed cylinder K series. This motor was obtained when I was traveling up north on business- has been in LONG term storage and hasn't been run in a LONG time. She turns over smoothly but came to me with the plugs out of it so I don't know the status of the powerhead. HOWEVER, I have a K-45 parts motor that is missing the lower unit that has STRONG compression and goes with this motor. I am not sure if the compression release feature was standard on the 1929 Johnson K-45 or not- but this one has it- I believe that it may have been another option.

Between this complete motor and the good compresison powerhead (not just a powerhead but is dressed out with magneto, carburetor, fuel tank, clamp bracket and the part of the leg that goes down to where the lower unit drops out.), you will end up with a nice K-45 with the underwater exhaust, compression release feature, everything nice. The gas tank on this motor is nice and clean as seen in the photos- but I'd still recommend a good rinsing with a solvent and a fuel line purge before using the fuel system again- it's just common sense on something that has sat this long.

The gas tank has taken some sort of impact near / around the fuel cap but it still screws on and off smoothly. It is also important to note that the underwater exhaust leg strap on this motor is correct but IS also broken- Johnson apparently did not calculate for the weight of the lower unit to lay on the strap when the motor was laying on the ground in storage- almost all of these are broken and most have been replaced with a simpler strap design. There is a gent from the Antique Outboard Motor Club who sells reproduction leg straps for the 1929 V-45 should you desire to go for the "100% original" look. I will get some photos of the partial motor that is included as soon as I can.
